Which TYPE of Sump Pump?

Sump Pumps

Sump pumps are your best defense against flooding.  An automatic sump pump moves drainage water that collects in the sump basin located in your basement or crawl space.

Clear fresh ground water only

NOT laundry water, water softener discharge, etc.  See "Effluent Pumps" for this kind of use.

There are certain factors that need to be considered when making your selection

1)  Do you have (or need) a submersible or pedestal style sump pump?

A submersible style sump pump is designed to be down in the pit and can be completely submerged in the water .A pedestal style pump features an impeller at the base of a pedestal.  At the top of the pedestal is the motor, which is not designed to be submerged in water.

The submersible style sump pump is:

  • More efficient
  • Longer lasting
  • Quieter
  • Completely hidden inside the sump basin
  • Easier to handle than pedestal style sump pumps

The pedestal style sump pump, with it's style of float switch, may be good if you have a deep, narrow sump pit.  The float's 'on' and 'off' points can be customized to work well in a situation like this.

Hopefully, this allows you to pick the TYPE of pump that will work best for you.  Next, we will determine how to pick the correct horsepower you need.
